Walking in obedience, we often seek to deepen our connection with God, aspiring to be true friends of Jesus. But what does it truly mean to be a friend of Jesus? Recently, our reflections led us to John 15:14, where Jesus himself outlines the criteria:
You are My friends if you do whatever I command you.
This statement by Jesus carries profound implications, ones that challenge conventional interpretations. Rather than equating friendship with religious rituals or mere church attendance, Jesus emphasizes obedience as the defining factor. He draws a clear distinction: true friendship with him hinges on obedience to his teachings, not just adherence to laws or regulations.
Seek a deeper understanding
But what are these teachings that Jesus commands us to follow? Many in modern society misconstrue them as a reiteration of the law or a set of rules to be observed. However, our exploration revealed a more profound truth: Jesus’s teachings transcend legalistic frameworks. While they include moral guidelines, such as refraining from murder or theft, their essence lies in fostering a loving relationship with God and others.
We delved into the purpose of the law, likening it to a babysitter or tutor who guided humanity until the arrival of Christ. The law served its function in teaching right from wrong, but its ultimate purpose was to prepare us for the revelation of Christ. With his coming, a new era dawned—a time for maturity in faith, characterized by a deeper understanding of love and grace.
In this new paradigm, obedience to Jesus involves more than mere rule-following; it entails walking in love and trust and responding to the promptings of the Holy Spirit in our daily lives. Jesus calls us to prioritize love for God and neighbor above religious formalities or outward displays of piety.
Trust amidst uncertainties
Furthermore, obedience isn’t about striving for perfection or fearing making mistakes. Jesus understands our humanity and acknowledges that we will stumble along the way. Instead, obedience is about earnestly aligning our lives with his teachings and trusting in his guidance despite life’s uncertainties and challenges.
Central to this journey of obedience is the concept of friendship with God. Jesus invites us to walk alongside him, trust his leading, and embrace the path of love and righteousness he lays before us. It’s a journey marked by intimacy, where we learn to listen to God’s voice and respond with faith and obedience.
As we navigate this journey, let us remember that obedience isn’t a burdensome duty but a joyful opportunity to deepen our friendship with Jesus. May we walk in obedience, not out of fear or obligation, but out of love and reverence for the one who calls us his friends.
