How to Experience God’s Presence in a Busy World

Life has never been more connected, yet many people have never felt more distracted. Here we talk about how to experience God’s presence in a busy world.
Our days are filled with notifications, emails, deadlines, responsibilities, social media, and endless to-do lists. Even when we finally slow down, our minds often keep racing.
In the middle of all this noise, many Christians quietly ask the same question:
“Why do I feel distant from God?”
The good news is that God has not moved away from us. More often than not, it is the busyness of life that prevents us from recognising His presence.
If you’ve been longing for a deeper connection with God, here are some practical ways to experience His presence in the midst of a busy world.
God Is Closer Than You Think
Many people think they need a special moment, a church service, or a spiritual breakthrough to experience God’s presence.
But Scripture tells us something different.
God is always present.
Psalm 139 reminds us that there is nowhere we can go where God is not already there. Whether we are at work, at home, sitting in traffic, or lying awake at night, God is near.
The challenge is not that God is absent.
The challenge is that we are often too distracted to notice Him.
Why We Struggle to Be Still
Modern life trains us to be constantly occupied.
We fill every quiet moment with something:
- Checking our phones
- Listening to podcasts
- Scrolling social media
- Watching television
- Thinking about the next task
Yet God often speaks most clearly when we slow down enough to listen.
Psalm 46:10 says:
“Be still, and know that I am God.”
Stillness is not doing nothing. It is intentionally creating space for God.
1. Start Small
One of the biggest mistakes people make is believing they need an hour-long quiet time every day.
While extended time with God is valuable, many people become discouraged because they cannot maintain an unrealistic routine.
Instead, start with five minutes.
Five focused minutes with God is better than thirty distracted minutes.
Find a quiet place, take a deep breath, and simply invite God into that moment.
Consistency matters more than duration.
2. Open Your Bible Expecting God to Speak
The Bible is not merely a collection of ancient writings. It is God’s living Word.
Rather than reading large sections quickly, try reading a short passage slowly.
Ask yourself:
- What does this teach me about God?
- What is God saying to me today?
- Is there something He wants me to trust, change, or remember?
The goal is not to finish a reading plan.
The goal is to encounter God.
3. Talk to God Honestly
Prayer does not have to sound impressive.
God is not looking for perfect words.
He already knows your thoughts, your fears, your questions, and your struggles.
Speak to Him honestly.
Thank Him for your blessings.
Share your concerns.
Ask for guidance.
Tell Him when you are tired, confused, or discouraged.
A genuine conversation with God is far more powerful than a polished prayer.
4. Create Moments of Quiet Throughout the Day
Experiencing God’s presence is not limited to a morning devotional.
You can become aware of God’s presence throughout your day.
Try pausing for a minute to pray:
- Before a meeting
- While driving
- During your lunch break
- Before picking up your phone
- Before going to sleep
These small moments help shift our focus from our circumstances back to God.
Over time, they create a lifestyle of walking with Him.
5. Worship Even When You Don’t Feel Like It
Some people think worship is something we do only when we feel close to God.
In reality, worship often helps us become aware of His presence.
Whether through singing, gratitude, prayer, or simply reflecting on God’s goodness, worship turns our attention away from ourselves and towards Him.
It reminds us that God is bigger than our worries and faithful in every season.
6. Spend Time With Other Believers
God often uses community to strengthen our faith.
When life becomes busy, church is sometimes the first thing people remove from their schedule.
Yet it is often the very thing they need most.
Being around other believers encourages us, challenges us, and reminds us that we are not walking this journey alone.
There is something powerful about worshipping together, praying together, and growing together in faith.
What Happens When We Spend Time in God’s Presence?
The circumstances of life may not immediately change.
Deadlines may still exist.
Challenges may still need to be faced.
But something within us changes.
We begin to experience:
- Greater peace
- Renewed strength
- Clearer perspective
- Deeper faith
- Increased trust in God
Isaiah 40:31 reminds us:
“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.”
God’s presence has a way of refreshing weary hearts and restoring tired souls.
An Invitation to Slow Down
Perhaps today God is not asking you to do more.
Perhaps He is inviting you to slow down.
To pause.
To listen.
To spend time with Him.
In a world that constantly demands your attention, God’s invitation remains the same:
“Be still, and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10)
The presence of God is not reserved for a select few. It is available to every believer who chooses to draw near to Him.
And when we make space for God, we often discover that He was closer than we realised all along.
