Teaching Children to Pray

Teaching Children to Pray
One of the greatest gifts we can give our children is a living relationship with God, and prayer is where that relationship begins. Children are often wonderfully open to God. They ask big questions, believe with simple faith and talk freely about what’s on their hearts. As parents, we have the privilege of showing them that God is always listening.
Prayer is simply talking to God
Sometimes we make prayer sound complicated, and children pick up on that. Help them understand that prayer is just talking to God, like talking to a loving Father who cares about everything in their lives. Jesus welcomed little children and said, “Let the little children come to me” (Matthew 19:14). God delights in hearing from them, whether their prayers are long or short, serious or silly.
Children learn by watching
Children learn far more from what they see than from what they’re told. When they hear you pray at meals, before a trip, for a sick friend or simply to say thank you, they learn that prayer is a normal, natural part of life. Let them hear you pray out loud, and let them see you turn to God when things are hard.
Practical ways to pray together
- Make it part of your routine. Mealtimes, the drive to school and bedtime are natural moments to pray together.
- Keep it short and simple. For young children, a sentence or two is enough. “Thank You, God, for my family. Please help Granny feel better. Amen.”
- Use a simple pattern. Older children may enjoy the “thank you, sorry, please” pattern: thank God for something, say sorry for something, and ask Him for something.
- Pray about real things. Encourage children to pray about what matters to them, like a test, a friendship or a lost toy. Nothing is too small for God.
- Teach the Lord’s Prayer. Jesus gave us this prayer as a model (Matthew 6:9-13). Learning it by heart gives children words to pray when they can’t find their own.
- Keep a prayer jar or journal. Write down prayer requests and look back later to see how God has answered. It’s a powerful faith-builder for the whole family.
What if God doesn’t answer the way they hoped?
Children may ask why God didn’t answer a prayer the way they wanted. Be honest and gentle. Explain that God always hears us and always loves us, and that sometimes His answer is “yes”, sometimes “wait”, and sometimes “I have something better”. These conversations are an opportunity to teach children to trust God’s goodness, even when we don’t understand.
Don’t worry about getting it perfect
You don’t have to be a perfect prayer warrior to teach your children to pray. What matters most is a sincere heart. When we pray with our children, we’re not only teaching them a habit; we’re inviting them into a lifelong friendship with God.
Children’s church at Gateway Family Church
At Gateway Family Church, our children’s church helps little ones learn about Jesus, worship and pray in a fun and loving environment, while you enjoy the service. We believe in partnering with parents to raise children who know and love God.
