How to Pray When You Don’t Know What to Say

How to pray when you don’t know how to? There are moments in life when prayer feels easy. Words come naturally, faith feels strong, and expressing our hearts to God feels comforting and familiar.
But there are also seasons when we simply do not know what to pray.
Pain, disappointment, anxiety, grief, confusion, or exhaustion can leave us feeling spiritually empty and unsure of what to say. The good news is that God understands these moments completely.
Prayer was never meant to be a performance. It is a relationship with a loving Father who invites His children to come to Him honestly.
God Invites Us to Come as We Are and learn how to pray
Many people think they need perfect words to pray effectively, but the Bible teaches something very different.
God is not looking for polished speeches or religious language. He desires sincere hearts.
Psalm 62:8 says:
“Trust in Him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to Him, for God is our refuge.”
Prayer is simply bringing our hearts before God.
Sometimes that may look like:
- worship
- thanksgiving
- repentance
- asking for help
- crying out in pain
- sitting quietly in God’s presence
Even when we struggle to express ourselves, God already knows what is in our hearts.
Jesus Gave Us a Model for Prayer
In Matthew 6:9–13, Jesus taught His disciples what is commonly known as the Lord’s Prayer.
This prayer was never meant to become a rigid formula. Instead, it gives believers a simple framework for approaching God.
Jesus taught believers to:
- honour God
- seek His will
- ask for daily provision
- seek forgiveness
- forgive others
- ask for guidance and protection
This reminds us that prayer can be simple and sincere.
The Holy Spirit Helps Us Pray
One of the greatest comforts for believers is knowing that we are not alone in prayer and knowing how to pray.
Romans 8:26 says:
“In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.”
Even when we cannot find the words, the Holy Spirit helps us and intercedes on our behalf.
God understands every emotion, every burden, and every silent cry.
Prayer Is About Relationship, Not Perfection
Prayer is not about impressing God.
It is about knowing Him.
Like any relationship, communication grows over time. The more believers spend time with God, the more natural prayer becomes.
Some practical ways to grow in prayer include:
- setting aside regular quiet time
- praying honestly and openly
- reading Scripture during prayer
- writing prayers in a journal
- worshipping through music
- praying with other believers
Prayer does not need to sound impressive to be meaningful.
God Hears Every Prayer
1 John 5:14 reminds believers:
“This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.”
God hears every sincere prayer.
Even in seasons of silence, uncertainty, or weakness, believers can trust that God remains near.
Growing in Faith Together
At Gateway Family Church, we believe prayer is a vital part of growing in relationship with God. Whether you are new to prayer or have been walking with God for many years, He invites you to come to Him openly and honestly.
If you are looking for a church in Pretoria East where you can grow spiritually and connect with other believers, we would love to welcome you.
